One problem, one solution
Lesson 80 in A Course In Miracles beckons your internal guide to awaken. It asks that it bring into awareness the single answer needed to solve all your problems.
The teaching posits that if you could unearth, or recognize, the fundamental problem underlying all discord in your life, you could in turn tap into the single solution needed to dissolve that precarious pile of junk that weighs so heavily on your spirit.
It goes even further to say that you already are at peace. That, “your one central problem has been answered, and you have no other.” (1)
“Let me recognize my problems have been solved.”
As I meditated on this mantra, I whole-heartedly listened. I longed for the answer to my many problems. I wanted it to descend on me and disappear the lot. I wanted the Miracle.
I strained to listen, yet all I heard was the usual chatter. With each moment I refocused and centered, to no avail. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Like radio waves in space, decades-old commentary rising to a maddening cacophony.
Then there it was.
Awareness descended, and like a veil, the chatter dropped to the base of my mind, scattering like ashes in the wind. A channel opened. A calming stream came rushing in.
The problem? Noise.
The solution? Silence.
It seems simple and it is, yet it isn’t simplistic.
Silence is the immutable.
In it’s continuous nature, silence exists at every moment. In every space-time. In totality.
Silence is the immutable.
Silence is pure extension.
Noise can be interrupted, and it interrupts. It begins, and it ends.
Noise travels. Like a nomad, seeking a place to land. To be heard for a fleeting moment. Always hovering over the baseline of untouched quietude.
Silence is the clearing.
When you are silent you allow. You become a vessel ready to receive. The space for life to unfold. For the noise to pass through, rather than stay trapped.
Space is needed for extension, growth and the continual birthing that is life.
This is what meditation allows us to tap into. Problems, people, responsibilities, hurts, chores and trials come and go. Silence, like a thread of guiding light, is the underlying solution. The resting place. Home.
For most of us, noise will always be a part of our lives. Tapping into our silent axis allows us to move through it with grace, and revel in its wild beauty.
Silence is the medium.
Like alchemy, silence is the medium that turns noise into fertile soil for the soul.
A mind filled with and focused only on noise, allows no room to rest in being. There is no space to move beyond the past. You necessarily become confined in an entropic pattern. This closed system can only ever produce the same results.
As a lifetime sufferer of a restless mind, quieting takes a lot of effort on my part. But as I continue to practice centering and tuning my self, to my Self, life is opening up in the most extraordinary ways.
I still have moments where I’m triggered by the noise of life, but the shift is undeniable. I’m humbled and grounded in the deepest gratitude for the silence–the home within–that A Course In Miracles has helped to reveal.
