A Dustpan & Brush Set Made To Last
A green lifestyle is not only a call to use natural products on our bodies and to eat chemical-free whole foods, but also to bring less toxic and non-disposable tools or design objects into our homes. Now, I can’t say for certain that this brush set will last you a lifetime, but chances are that it will serve you well for several decades.
Not So Fun Facts
One of the things about our shopping culture that is the most harmful to the environment and society – the insanity of which makes me want to scream, is the attraction to cheap product. Stuff that we are well aware will not last. Yet there’s something deviously tempting about what feels like a bargain, even when we know it’s junk. You can buy a plastic, or perhaps tin, dust pan set for under $10, but:
- It will be poorly designed/ made and won’t sweep effectively.
- It will wear in a short period of time and need to be replaced with another subpar set.
- The continual replacement of cheap plastic products adds to pollution.
- The making of cheap plastic goods is toxic to the environment from the outset.
- There is a human cost to buying cheap goods – often made in near slave conditions.
It’s no surprise that many of us play into this “buy, use, toss” consumption model. Planned obsolescence has had a massive impact on American culture since its emergence in 1930’s Great Depression. If you’re not familiar with the planned obsolescence economic policy, take a look at The Story Of Stuff website or watch the original video on stuff made for the dump.
Getting To The Fun Facts!
If you hate the idea of buying cheap, toxic stuff destined for the dump, you’re going to love Bürstenhaus Redecker brush sets. These brushes are skillfully made and have a sweet history.
Friedrich Redecker, Sr. learned the craft of brush-making as a child and began to sell his handmade goods in 1935 in rural Germany. Three generations and 80 years later, the business is still family owned and operated. Friedrich’s grandson continues in the tradition, by keeping production based in Germany, using high quality natural materials and assuring skilled craftsmanship.
This handcrafted dust pan and brush set is made with:
- Sleek stainless steel, that leaves no space between the ground and pan.
- Wood handles made from German beechwood.
- Extremely efficient 100% natural horsehair brush.
- Leather loops on both handles for easy storage.
You’re probably wondering how they come by the horse hair. Although I love natural fibers and materials, I want to be assure no animals were harmed in the process. Horse hair comes from shaving either the mane or the tail of the animal and is as painless to the horse as when you get a haircut.
The advantage of horse hair is that it’s particularly good at picking up smaller dust particles and debris. Because this is natural hair, you can also shampoo and wash the brush! Then leave to dry, but be sure not to expose to high heat. Once dry, give it a comb to do away with tangles, returning the brush to mint condition.
The steel dust pan is so well made that it makes completely flush contact with the ground, allowing no debris to sweep underneath. While the wooden handles are made to contour the palm, so it feels good to hold the set. You can keep the wood in good condition by oiling with linseed oil.
Size Matters
The Bürstenhaus Redecker set pictured in my photos come from Villagers, a wonderful homesteading shop in Asheville, NC. Keep in mind that this is a good sized set! Roughly:
- Both brush and pan are 13.8 inches long
- The pan is 10.2 inches wide
- Brush is 5.1 inches tall
The second option sold on Amazon is a smaller “tabletop” brush set. Possibly a better fit for compact apartment dwellers, at:
- 6-1/4 inches x 4-1/8 inches
