My Likes & Dislikes After Several Months Of Using Morrocco Method
You may remember from my original post on Morrocco Method’s products back in November 2016 that I was not having great luck with the Apple Cider Vinegar, nor Earth Essence shampoos. I was determined to make Morrocco Method work and proceeded to experiment with the Sea Essence water element shampoo.
The good news is that the Sea Essence formula did a noticeably better job and left my hair scented with a fragrant aroma that reminds me of Ylang Ylang, although the result of some combination of vetiver, flower and fruit extracts in the formula.
The bad news is that although natural vetiver essential oil has incredible staying power and is used by perfumers to carry the notes of other scents, after investigating this formula there is a chemical I’m not crazy about in this shampoo which might have to do with the lasting fragrance. It’s only included in Morrocco Method’s Sea Essence and Pine Shale shampoos. For further details read to the end of this review.
To make matters worse, after 3 1/2 months of using Morrocco Method’s shampoos exclusively, with the very occasional No-Poo wash, in truth, my hair is not looking or feeling all that great. Overall it feels like these shampoos are drying my hair out, while leaving it weighed down and dull.
A Matter Of Chemistry?
I really wanted to like Morrocco Method’s shampoos! Although it’s not been my experience, I’ve read glowing reviews and reports by other green beauty bloggers claiming to have great results with these foam-free formulas.
To look fresh and put together, I need to wash my hair daily using MM’s shampoos. Which is totally counter productive considering that the concept is to wash your hair less frequently, so that the natural oils on your scalp can replenish your hair.
I suspect that my hair type and chemistry are likely playing a role in the results I’m getting. I’ve noticed that several of the bloggers that promote Morrocco Method’s shampoos have slightly coarser looking curly hair. I have sleek, straight hair, which has always been very sensitive to the effects of oils.
For example I’m someone who will never use hair oil as a styling agent. Oils make my hair look gross and greasy with the slightest contact. To my horror I have friends who slather their hair with oils, and look great doing so.
Strange Bedfellows
Maybe it’s not so strange, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Morrocco Method’s Sea Essence Shampoo is remarkably more effective when followed by Dr. Bronner’s Citrus Hair Conditioner Rinse. I’ve had much better success with this combination than any of the hair conditioners I’ve tried from Morrocco Method.
When these two are used together, my hair seems to come back to life and returns to the natural sheen I’ve always been used. With this combination my hair appears to stay clean for 2 -3 days.
Give These A try
The Morrocco Method products that I love unequivocally are the leave-in Diamond Crystal Mist Conditioner – which works really well with the No-poo Method, as well as the 100% Boar Bristle Brush.
The Diamond Crystal Mist doesn’t make my hair oily, but noticeably hydrates the hair. I prefer to apply it on dry hair and can really see the difference one it’s dry again. It’s visibly more shiny and less brittle.
Brushing my hair with the Pure Boar Bristle Brush has become a nightly ritual that I enjoy immensely. It feels so good to invigorate my scalp with this traditional hair brush. I’ve recently noticed that I have a ton of baby hairs sticking up! Which looks a bit funny if I zero in on it, but I’m thrilled to see that I have so much new hair growth. I’m fairly certain that I can attribute this spurt in new hair growth to this brushing technique.
Before you buy a brush, be sure to get the details in my review of the each of the different types of Boar Bristle Brushes you can buy from Morrocco Method. This will help you choose between the nylon combo brush or the pure boar bristle.
I would recommend that you give the Apple Cider Vinegar, Heavenly Essence or Earth Essence shampoos a try. These are all made of clean as can be ingredients (100% on my scale) and it’s possible that they may work with your personal chemistry as well as other reviewers have noted. They seemed to have great effect on my husband’s dry scalp.
Ingredients
Shampoo is one of the most difficult natural beauty products to formulate, and although Morrocco Method’s shampoos are made with some exquisite ingredients, I do want to point out that less than halfway through the list Phenylpropanol is included in this formula. This synthetic chemical’s function is supposed to be as a preservative here, but it’s commonly used as a fragrance agent. I wouldn’t decide against this shampoo based on the inclusion of this singular ingredient, but I feel it’s necessary to note.
Phenylpropanol, Lactic Acid, Ascorbic Acid and Citric Acid are all NOT included in the Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo, Heavenly Essence Shampoo or Earth Essence Shampoo formulas.
