Saint Olio is a handmade line of toxin-free, essential oil and flower water based products
Born out of the desire to create a cleaning solution that would delight the senses while killing germs and producing a deep clean, Sherri Kaven–a photographer in Portland, Oregon and mom of three kids–was inspired to create the line when she discovered the green-washed sprays being used throughout her workout studios.
Like so many “eco” labeled cleaning products, they often contained hidden chemicals, while not smelling all that great either. Seizing the opportunity, Sherri set out to make a spray that not only smelled heavenly, but one that could be used as a powerful all-purpose and all-surface cleaner.
After using essential oils in her own home for over twenty years
And having a previous essential oil based product line, Sherri was well versed in the powerful properties of essential oils. Especially drawn to citrus scents, which just happen to be potent antimicrobial agents and deodorizers, you can expect that all of Saint Olio’s fragrance families incorporate citrus. Sherri’s love of citrus goes so deep that an old botanical drawing of an orange branch became the base for the pretty Saint Olio logo that Sherri and her husband designed together.
The desire to create a product that was not only effective, but a pleasure to use and smell is also no superficial matter
Medical studies show that essential oils can have beneficial effects on the brain. Understanding that essential oils have the power to alter a person’s mood, Sherri intentionally formulated Saint Olio’s blends to have uplifting and calming effects. Just imagine, a cleaning or body product that is not only safe to use, but that will infuse your mind with a sense of well being while you polish that surface squeaky clean or spray your pits to stay fresh all day!
Presently the line includes three intoxicating botanical blends. Each fragrance set features a deodorizing body spray and a home cleaning spray, with a hand/ body soap coming soon — currently in development in collaboration with a Portland based artisanal soap maker.
My experience of the products? Fantastic.
I’ve been using the No. 1 Body Refresher for a couple weeks now and am obsessed. I’m no newbie to using chemical-free, spray type, essential oil deodorants and I must say that this is one of the most neutralizing essential oil formulas my pits have experienced. The combination of Citrus, Lemongrass + Ylang Ylang in the No. 1 formula sends me to cloud nine. I keep it in my purse and freshen up throughout the day.
It’s a bit pricey at $20 per bottle (on the Saint Olio website, $24 in store), but I like to break down the price of healthy luxury necessities in terms of lattes. Skip 4-5 lattes (or 2 smoothies) and you’ve made up the cost of this incredible spray that won’t clog your lymph nodes and will last 2-3 months. It’s really not a high price to pay for good health and smelling like you’ve just bathed in petals of paradise.
I’ve also been impressed using the No. 2 Aromatic Cleaner around the house. The aromatic blend is irresistible, Geranium, Rose + Sweet Orange, and I’ve found that it works amazingly well on a wide variety of surfaces. It’s incredible on glass and pretty good on mirrors if you use a cloth. Great on counters and works really well on wood surfaces. Doesn’t dry the wood out, but because it’s porous the scent lingers surprisingly long for essential oils.
Much like life is a balance, so is thrift and pleasure
The Aromatic Cleaners also go for $20 (on the Saint Olio website, $22 in store). A pretty good price for this type of handmade product. If the cost feels like a stretch, think of this as the kind of buy that falls into the realm of “treats”. A bit like lighting a designer candle. You could reserve your use of Saint Olio’s Aromatic Cleaners for your linens, or to wipe up the table before a meal. Then just go for a plain vinegar solution in places you want to douse on a daily basis.
